09 Sep The exhibition “Atlas Maior – Un universo senza confini” opens to the public
The 2024 exhibition traditionally offered by the Banca di Piacenza to the city during the Christmas season is dedicated to the Atlas Maior, the masterpiece of 17th-century cartography created by Joan Blaeu. The exhibition, set up by NEO (Narrative Environments Operas), will be hosted at the PalabancaEventi (formerly Palazzo Galli) in Via Mazzini 14, Piacenza, from December 14, 2024, to January 12, 2025.
The exhibition, titled “Atlas Maior – Un universo senza confini – La cartografia, il viaggio e l’arte”, is part of the initiatives of Rete Cultura Piacenza, a project that brings together the Fondazione di Piacenza e Vigevano, the Municipality of Piacenza, the Province of Piacenza, the Chamber of Commerce of Emilia, the Diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio, and the Emilia-Romagna Region, working together to promote the region’s cultural heritage. The event is sponsored by Banca di Piacenza, which is also organizing the event.
The scientific project for the exhibition is curated by Antonio Iommelli, director of the Civic Museums of Palazzo Farnese, and focuses on the ten volumes of the Atlas Maior by Joan Blaeu, which contain 594 engravings. These invaluable volumes belong to the bank in Via Mazzini, thanks to a 2010 donation by Annarosa Mars.
The event offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of historical cartography through a journey divided into four thematic sections. Visitors will have the chance to admire detailed maps, paintings, and scientific instruments from the era, immersing themselves in a journey that combines art, science, and history.
