About This Project

Rediscovering Lotto deepens our understanding of the last years the painter spent in Bergamo and of one of his most famous projects, creating drawings for the wooden choir of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The exhibition revolves around a major unpublished work, a carving depicting the Creation, laid out by the artist and delivered as an “essay” to the administrators of the Basilica. Alongside this rediscovered masterpiece and the Lotto paintings from the Carrara Academy, are displayed paintings and drawings from the same period. These works  reveal that uplifting narrative, symbolic and unconventional, that also characterizes the creativity of the inlays in Santa Maria Maggiore, like the Assumption of Celana, a product of Lotto’s extraordinary ability to tell stories through pictures.
