About This Project

“EXTREME. Particle Research” is the permanent exhibition designed and realized by the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in partnership with CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) and INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics) and dedicated to the physics of particles, the tools, and the professionals working in this field.

The story of the exhibition starts with the concept of traces, interpreted as the element that allow us to recognize and reconstruct an event that can not be directly observed. Like many other scientific disciplines – from archeology to forensic science – even particle physics is based on the observation of these traces.

The path continues with the tools, the particle detectors, used by physicists to find the traces of the particles. Through  direct exposure, the exhibit allows you to experience the “cosmic silence” searched for by the researchers underwater and underground, the extreme locations where these experiments often take place. An additional area explores the daily life of the physicists, engineers, and technicians who work on these experiments.
